Babytalk and Voiceovers

I don’t share J’s obsession with house makeover programmes, but I’m fascinated by the fact that George Clarke has a fairly gruff speaking voice but for his voiceovers always raises pitch quite noticeably. I wonder if it’s for the same reason that we alter pitch and speech patterns when we talk to babies?

Perhaps if politicians employed the same techniques they’d more convincing. After all, most of them do seem to assume their audiences are somewhat immature. Though considering how many numpties we vote for, they may have a point.
